You don't have to. You could use NAT, but the biggest thing against it
would be:

- Because NAT breaks the end to end host functionality the Internet was
built upon. It wasn't designed to have NAT and so on.

If two people are using NAT, it breaks things even more, in some cases,
without a lot of work, it won't work.

Using NAT does have several advantages. As you pointed out you, it _kinda_
helps reduce address space, and kinda increases security.

Okay, I think I'll use this as an announcement place ;) I'm currently
entertaining the idea of using zebra's prefix filtering to help ensure
bogus routes don't propagate (eg. misguied people advertising !(Backbone or
host) networks) in the linux routing distro by default. I'll put up a wiki
page RSN after testing it and confirming it works. Comments anyone?

Mmm, Just keep in mind you're breaking several things. With pretty much
most cases, you could work around it with port forwarding and so on, but it
breaks the end to end (ie, host to host) design.

(There was a document, (RFC from memory) that had best engineering
pratices. One of those was to keep things as simple as possible, because
fe, you end up confusing people with how things work, or you make more work
for yourself.)

Sincerely,
Andrew Griffiths

P.S Its early, and I've only started on my coffee.
