I've been down this path with free2air, consume and freenetworks. And it was
the main topic of my presentation at the global wireless meet hosted by
SeattleWireless in January this year. Is it too late to join this workgroup?

Absolutely. In fact the reverse is true in many circumstances.
groundzero (a host based gateway) is developing into quite a hub for mulitple
point to point connections, and this requires an omni. Oh, radical subnetting
quashes the hidden node issue. This would not be possible with many APs that
don't switch to IBSS mode - AP to AP point to point communication just ain't
gonna work.
