I agree with Jason on the PCI vs PCMCIA argument.

The USB devices are particularly attractive because they are usually the
cheapest, and can very easily be located right near an external antenna (a
5m USB cable is heaps cheaper than 5m of LMR400, and is lossless - even
putting a USB hub in the roof will still be more attractive).

The Linux support for them is usually fairly poor though :-(
